Morteratsch Glacier Ride in the Swiss Alps

Let yourself be enchanted by the Morteratsch Glacier!

The Morteratsch Glacier has a special magic that becomes even stronger from horseback. Over the course of three days, we ride from the Engadin River Ranch in Madulain up to the Morteratsch Glacier and back again. Along the way, we let ourselves be enchanted by the unique views and the scent of the peaceful larch forests, where the first autumn colours may already be appearing. The route - and especially the glacier itself as the highlight - offers wonderful scenery for photos during this relaxing weekend adventure. After the trail ride, you will receive a digital gallery with impressions from this experience, created by Joanna, the photographer and horse guide accompanying the ride.

Program

Day 1

On the first day, we meet at noon for a shared lunch at the Engadin River Ranch. Afterwards, we get to know our horses and ride to Bever to the Gasthaus Spinas, our accommodation for the first night.

Now it’s time to relax: we enjoy the last rays of sunshine of the day - whether individually outside on the terrace, with a good book, or in pleasant conversation with our fellow riders - always surrounded by the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Upper Engadin. In the evening, we gather in the cosy dining room, enjoy a delicious dinner, and let the first day come to a relaxed close.

Individual arrival
11:30 am – Welcome
12:00 pm – Lunch
2:00 pm – Meet the horses
3:00 pm – Ride to Bever
5:30 pm – Time to relax
7:30 pm – Dinner

Day 3

You have probably rarely slept this peacefully. Val Morteratsch is far away from any civilisation - the perfect place to leave everyday life behind and feel at one with yourself and the nature surrounding you. We start the day at a relaxed pace and enjoy the view of the Morteratsch Glacier already at breakfast.

Afterwards, we saddle up for the last time and ride back to Madulain along a different route high above Pontresina. Back at the River Ranch, we take care of the horses and, after an apéro riche in the evening, begin our journey home tired, happy, and with beautiful memories to take with us…

8:00 am – Breakfast
9:00 am – Grooming and saddling the horses & ride back to Madulain
5:00 pm – Official closing
Individual departure

Day 2

Rise and shine - well rested, we treat ourselves to a generous breakfast. Afterwards, we groom and saddle our horses before setting off towards Val Morteratsch - a day to recharge in nature, enjoy the beautiful larch forests of this area, breathe in the scent of the Swiss stone pines, and admire the impressive mountain scenery.

In the afternoon, we reach the Morteratsch Glacier, where our hotel is also located. Here, we take the time to create some beautiful photos of you and your loyal companion in this extraordinary setting. We then take care of our horses and afterwards enjoy a well-deserved dinner.

8:00 am – Breakfast
10:00 am – Grooming and saddling the horses, departure for the Morteratsch Glacier
5:30 pm – Arrival, unsaddling, and taking care of the horses
7:30 pm – Dinner

Riding

“The greatest happiness on earth is found on the back of a horse.” There is definitely truth in that - especially when riding through the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Upper Engadin.

For this retreat, you should be confident riding in all gaits, as we will be trotting and cantering for longer stretches.

The horses at the Engadin River Ranch are sure-footed and reliable Franche Montagne horses, a typical Swiss breed. Nearly all of them are trained in classical English riding and are ridden with a snaffle bridle and either a Western or English saddle.

For the ride, you will receive a saddlebag in which you can store everything important for the day (picnic, water, warm clothing, sun protection, and small personal items).

The retreat takes place in all weather conditions and requires a minimum of five participants. In case of very bad weather, the route may need to be adjusted.

The maximum rider weight is 80 kg, and wearing a riding helmet is mandatory.

Your Guide - Joanna

I’m Joanna - a horse girl at heart for as long as I can remember and a passionate traveller. Over the past years, I have spent around 17 months travelling the world, including many weeks and months working as a volunteer, guide, and photographer on ranches in Canada, Chile, Argentina, and Ecuador.

Since these experiences, I have been sharing the unique rides that I have personally experienced and wholeheartedly recommend through my own project, “Untamed Trails” - so far with a strong focus on South America. Cat and I share a passion for extraordinary riding experiences all over the world, which is how we met in 2025 and began working together. “Normally,” I work as a digital marketing specialist, making sure that Riding & Yoga retreats are seen and booked - and meanwhile, I’ve had the privilege of accompanying selected rides myself as a guide.

I’m incredibly excited to accompany this multi-day ride in the Engadin. This ride does not include yoga; instead, I will be there as your guide and photographer. For me, the joy of this experience is clearly at the heart of it all: if the participants smile as much on their horses as I do, then the journey has been a complete success.

Accommodation

Guesthouse Spinas

The Gasthaus Spinas is idyllically nestled among ancient larch trees in Val Bever. All rooms have been renovated and feature new beds, some with 160 cm box-spring beds. The showers and bathrooms are located on the corridor (you will be provided with towels as well as a bathrobe).

Their kitchen philosophy: pure nature and regional, seasonal cuisine served with genuine warmth and hospitality.

Hotel Morteratsch

The Hotel Morteratsch could hardly be more idyllic. Nestled in the middle of the forest, it offers a unique view of Piz Bellavista, Piz Bernina, and Piz Morteratsch - and of course, the Morteratsch Glacier.

Luggage

Your luggage (suitcase, backpack, or bag) will be transported for you by car.

For the ride, you will receive a saddlebag in which you can store everything important for the day (picnic, water, warm clothing, sun protection, and small personal items).

Insurance and Terms & Conditions

Your place in the retreat is definitively reserved upon payment of a deposit of 400 CHF or 400 €. This amount is non-refundable in case of cancellation, unless we are able to find another participant who joins the retreat under the same conditions. The remaining balance is due no later than six months before the start of the retreat. The general terms and conditions of Reiten & Yoga apply.

We recommend taking out travel cancellation insurance, which may cover any contractually owed cancellation fees if necessary. If you do not already have such insurance, we recommend Allianz Travel Insurance: Allianz Travel Insurance. You can use it to insure any retreat of your choice.
